About the Organization

The mathematical sciences are heavily male dominated fields both nationally and locally. The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is a national organization devoted to promoting equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences. Under the national organization, there are over 100 AWM student chapters at universities across the country. The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) Graduate Chapter at UNC-Chapel Hill provides an opportunity for both women and men in the UNC Mathematics Department to address the gender gap in mathematics and encourage the success of UNC’s female mathematicians. Our AWM chapter facilitates the building of relationships between students and faculty, with the goal that all members will find support and encouragement in their work and studies. We host various social and academic events throughout the year in the Mathematics Department in Phillips Hall at UNC. These meetings are open to all members and prospective members. Membership of all AWM chapters is open to everyone, regardless of identity, and any student or faculty member of UNC-Chapel Hill can be a member of the AWM Chapter at UNC-Chapel Hill.

About the Officers

Caroline Moosmueller, Faculty Advisor

Caroline is an Assistant Professor and J. Burton Linker Fellow at the Department of Mathematics at UNC Chapel Hill. Before joining UNC in Fall 2022, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UC San Diego. She has been the AWM faculty mentor for both the graduate and undergraduate chapters since 2025 and is the co-organizer for a new seminar MINDS (Mathematics in Data Science) in the UNC Mathematics Department. Her research interests include the mathematics of data science and computational optimal transport with applications in biology and medicine. A fun fact about her is that she is originally from Austria.

Kaitlyn Hohmeier, President

Kaitlyn is a fourth-year applied math Ph.D. student who works with Drs. Caroline Moosmueller and Nicolas Fraiman on the theory and applications of optimal transport in graph classification. A fun fact about her is that she has a strong creative side and enjoys classical piano, creative writing, and art. She also enjoys playing video games and reading.

Leyi Zhang, Treasurer

Leyi is a fifth-year applied math Ph.D. student working with Dr. Greg Forest on the simulations of COVID-19 Infection in human airways. Some fun facts about her are that she’s a tea fanatic and loves games. Dwarf Fortress is her favorite game!

Audrey Becker, Secretary

Audrey is a third-year pure math grad working in the algebra/geometry/topology field, studying the applications of certain algebraic tools to problems in statistics. In her free time, she likes to read and run, and she was a competitive swimmer in college. She also enjoys walking dogs at her local animal shelter. She is excited to meet new people through AWM and is inspired by everyone who has worked to make the math community a more inclusive space!

Tracey Oellerich, Event Coordinator

Tracey is a postdoctoral researcher in Mathematics & Computational Medicine, and her mentor is Dr. Karin Leiderman. Her research focuses on modeling blood coagulation using machine learning methods. Outside of math she enjoys reading, playing with her cat, and crafting.
